The Symbolism Behind the Flags
The protests erupted in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Southern California. While critics argue that waving a foreign flag undermines the protesters’ claims of being American, the use of the Mexican flag appears to be part of a broader, if paradoxical, political message. Rather than simply opposing deportation, many of the demonstrators seem to be promoting an ideological agenda that leans toward nativism.
Claims of Mexican Identity and Historical Revisionism
