Unveiling Reality: How Metaphysics Questions Hidden Assumptions

How Metaphysics Probes Hidden Assumptions to Make Sense of Reality

Each of us carries metaphysical beliefs, whether we are aware of them or not. Questioning these underlying assumptions is opening new pathways to address some of physics’ most enduring challenges.

Metaphysics often suffers from an unflattering reputation. Philosopher Stephen Mumford from the University of Durham, who penned a concise introduction to the subject, observes that many dismiss it as a complete waste of time. He notes that critics argue it merely indulges in endless debates over seemingly trivial matters – reminiscent of the old question about how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.

It is easy to understand such skepticism. The term “metaphysics,” which originates from the Greek word for “beyond,” deals with questions that can appear bizarre. It delves into puzzles like the true nature of everyday objects or the essence of colors. Unlike the methods of science that rely on observation and experimentation, metaphysics employs pure reasoning. Techniques such as reductio ad absurdum, which demonstrate the implausibility of a counterclaim by drawing out its absurd consequences, lie at the heart of its approach.
