Reflections from a Road Trip
Recently, my wife and I embarked on an extended journey that took us through North Carolina and Florida. We traveled by car this time instead of flying, and along the way we witnessed striking billboards about eternal truths. One billboard in particular, featuring a flatlined heart monitor and the stark message “After you die, you will meet God,” left a lasting impression. It cited a well-known biblical verse that reminds us each person only lives once before facing judgment—a thought that many prefer not to consider.
The Inevitable Visit of Death
No matter how much we hope to postpone it, death will eventually come knocking at our door. Aside from those present when Christ returns, everyone faces the undeniable reality of mortality. This concept is reinforced by scripture, where Jesus urges us not to fear human beings who can only kill the body, but rather to respect the power that can destroy both body and soul. The notion of an eternal judge is as old as the scriptures themselves and calls us to reflect deeply on our spiritual preparedness.
Lessons from an Ancient Story
One of the most vivid biblical narratives is the story of Moses and the ten plagues in Egypt. In those events, God delivered a series of calamities on the Egyptians while sparing the Israelites. For instance, during the plague of hail, the region where the Israelites resided was untouched, and during the plague of darkness, light remained in their homes. This selective protection was grounded in the identity of the people themselves, a safeguard that ultimately proved insufficient for the final plague.
When God declared that a devastating judgment would be visited upon every household, nothing—not even one’s ethnic or cultural background—could prevent the coming calamity. Instead, it was the application of the Passover lamb’s blood that served as a shield, causing the destroyer to “pass over” those homes marked in faith. The Israelites, alerted to the danger, acted in obedience and were saved from the ultimate loss.
The Dual Reality of Our Future
Today, the same essential truth remains: death comes for everyone, and what follows is the decisive moment when we encounter either the God who saves or the God who condemns. For believers, the sacrifice of Christ stands as the fulfillment of that protective promise—a guarantee that the destructive power will be held at bay for those who trust in Him.
This ancient account underscores a profound message: there is no alternative path to the Divine. Regardless of one’s beliefs—whether you identify with Christianity, another faith, or none at all—the encounter with God after death is inevitable. Therefore, it is vital to reflect on which aspect of His nature we will face when that moment arrives.
Preparing for the Ultimate Encounter
The choice is clear and eternal. Rather than waiting until the final moment and confronting the unalterable decree of judgment, it is wise to embrace the saving grace offered through faith. Reflect on this truth, and consider taking steps now that could influence the most significant event of your life.
