Soldiers of God Assault Nazareth Greek Orthodox Church, Sparking Protests

Protesters Invade Nazareth Greek Orthodox Church and Remove Outer Gate

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth reported that a group calling itself the “Soldiers of God” broke into the church on Sunday evening while it was closed. According to a statement posted on the church’s social media, the intruders removed the church’s outer gate and rang its bell without permission.

Broken gate at the church

The group claimed that their actions were a protest in response to a terror attack by Islamic State militants at a church in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people. Footage shared on social media appears to show a Greek Orthodox priest trying to calm a small crowd as demonstrators wave both the Israeli flag and a symbol associated with Israeli-Christian sentiments.

In some clips, individuals identified as part of the “Soldiers of God” are seen striking people in the crowd with wooden crosses. Senior church officials quickly arrived at the scene, confronted the protestors, and contacted the police. The church has also announced plans for a public gathering in its courtyard the following evening to respond to the incident.

Local Organization Condemns the Assault

A local group, the National Democratic Assembly in Nazareth, denounced the actions of the “Soldiers of God.” In a report by Arabic-language media, the Assembly described the attack as not only an assault on a sacred site but also an affront to the people and national identity of Nazareth. The group characterized the incident as a misguided attempt to sow discord and promote external agendas within the local community.
