Pope Leo XIV and the Major Papal Basilicas of Rome
Pope Leo XIV has formally assumed stewardship of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran—the principal cathedral of the Bishop of Rome and the venerable Mother Church. This ceremonial moment marks the commencement of his pontificate, reaffirming his commitment as the shepherd of the universal Church.
In keeping with long-standing tradition, the pontiff visited Rome’s four major papal basilicas: St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major. Each of these sacred sites holds profound spiritual significance and reflects centuries of faith and devotion.
During his visits, Pope Leo XIV honored the relics belonging to Saints Peter and Paul and spent time in prayer before the revered Marian icon known as Salus Populi Romani. Through these acts, he underscored his devotion to apostolic traditions and his deep reverence for Mary.
