Pope Leo XIV and His Impact on Rome’s Principal Basilicas

Pope Leo XIV and the Major Papal Basilicas of Rome

Pope Leo XIV has formally assumed the stewardship of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the seat of the Bishop of Rome and the Mother Church of all Christians. This significant ceremony signals the complete commencement of his pontificate, underscoring his role as the shepherd of the universal Church.

In keeping with longstanding tradition, the pontiff also visited Rome’s four principal Papal Basilicas. Among these are St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major, each celebrated for its unique spiritual heritage. During his visits, he paid homage to the relics of Saints Peter and Paul and offered prayers before the revered Marian image known as Salus Populi Romani. His actions reflect a strong commitment to preserving apostolic tradition and a deep Marian devotion.
