Mass Grave Uncovers Remains of Eight Evangelical Christian Leaders

The Discovery of a Mass Grave in Colombia

Colombian officials have uncovered a mass grave in a rural area of Calamar, a municipality in the Guaviare department. The remains of eight evangelical Christian leaders, all native to Arauca and involved in humanitarian and spiritual work, were found at the site. Authorities believe these leaders were deliberately targeted after being summoned in April by dissidents linked to the FARC, under the command of an operative known as Iván Mordisco. Although initial suspicions hinted at the involvement of an emerging ELN cell, no connection between the victims and that organization has been established.

Investigation and Exhumation

The breakthrough in the case came with the capture of a guerrilla fighter in May. A mobile phone seized during the arrest contained photographs showing both the detained leaders and the crime scene, which ultimately led investigators to the mass grave. The exhumation process has since commenced, providing new evidence for authorities to pursue further leads.

The victims have been identified as James Caicedo, Óscar García, Máryuri Hernández, Maribel Silva, Isaid Gómez, Carlos Valero, Nixon Peñaloza, and Jesús Valero. All were actively involved with Evangelical councils such as Alianza de Colombia and Cuadrangular.

Response from the Evangelical Confederation

The Evangelical Confederation of Colombia (CEDECOL) has strongly condemned the crime, expressing deep solidarity with the bereaved families and communities. In its statement, CEDECOL called for prayers for peace and comfort for those affected and demanded that authorities pursue a swift and thorough investigation. The organization also stressed the need to protect those engaged in spiritual leadership, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to violence.

Drawing on a biblical reference from Matthew 5:10, the statement reaffirmed that those who endure persecution for righteousness are promised a place in the kingdom of heaven, underlining the spiritual dimension of this tragedy.

Official Reactions and the Socio-Political Landscape

Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the killings as a grave human rights violation and insisted on boosting state and security operations in regions long afflicted by armed conflict. The tragedy has also resonated deeply with family members of the victims; one daughter expressed that the communities feel abandoned as two armed groups vie for control, leaving civilians with inadequate state protection.

Local leaders share this sentiment. The mayor of Calamar described a sense of isolation among residents and urged the national government to address the severe security challenges without distractions. International bodies, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, have voiced concerns that such crimes undermine essential community voices and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in rural Colombia.

Context and Broader Impact of the Conflict

Data from the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) indicate that this incident is the most severe massacre recorded in Colombia in 2025. Over 30 multiple homicide cases have been documented in rural areas, largely stemming from territorial disputes between FARC and ELN dissidents. Guaviare, in particular, has seen recurring violent clashes, with recent events reporting the arrival of numerous bodies at a local morgue following intense conflicts.

This latest tragedy starkly illustrates the vulnerability of social and religious leaders operating in regions contested by illegal armed groups. The rapid investigation, coupled with widespread denouncement from both civil and religious sectors, highlights an urgent demand for enhanced security measures, effective law enforcement, and genuine institutional commitment to safeguard those who strive for peace and community development in Colombia.
