Union County Program Inspires Hope for Families Facing Financial Hardship

For many families struggling to cover their daily expenses, finding a way out of financial distress can seem overwhelming. A Union County initiative is proving that the right support and encouragement can transform lives.

Common Heart’s Getting Ahead program is set to expand throughout Union County with a simple, yet powerful message: believe in yourself. Jessica Rittenour, one of the program’s participants, summed it up when she said, “I can breathe now because I have hope.” Her journey began during a time when financial burdens and the challenges of supporting a family left her feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

The program, which spans 19 sessions, offers participants guidance on financial matters as well as mental and emotional well-being. In an effort to ensure that families can fully engage without worrying about additional obstacles, the initiative provides incentives such as grocery rewards, complimentary meals, and free childcare for each session attended. As Rittenour noted, the program effectively removed the barriers that might otherwise have prevented her attendance.

Delan Fulgham, the economic empowerment director at Common Heart, explained that the core of the program is about building self-confidence. Rather than directing participants down a fixed career path, the program encourages individuals to explore and embrace their own potential. “It’s all about moving from a state of survival to one of thriving, based on where each person envisions their future,” Fulgham explained.

Since completing the course, Rittenour has taken a significant step toward financial independence by launching her own business, Simple Solutions CLT. More than just a pathway to economic stability, the program has provided her with a supportive community that believes in her abilities and is invested in her success.

The next session of the Getting Ahead program begins on July 8 in Marshville. Families interested in learning more about how to overcome financial challenges through comprehensive support are encouraged to seek additional information through local community outreach.
