Is the Great Commission Realistic in Our Modern Times?
Has the final command of Jesus become impossible to achieve? The directive found in Matthew 28:19-20—often known as the Great Commission—calls on believers to “make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you.” Given that Jesus originally issued this command in a context very different from our modern world, it is natural to ask how His followers can meet this challenge today.
Christian discipleship continues to offer a fulfilling purpose, and learning about Jesus remains relevant regardless of the era. For those who truly embrace Christ, the joy of a personal encounter with God and the transformation that comes from a shared journey of faith is incomparable.
Changing Cultural Contexts and Their Impact
Throughout history, Western thought was initially shaped by Christian faith, later enriched by its influence, and now often viewed as outdated. The shift in perspective has led many to dismiss Christianity as a relic of superstitious times. Such negativity toward the faith may be seen as a deliberate distancing from a burden of conviction that many find uncomfortable.
It is unusual today for people to come together in meetings that critically examine and challenge long-held mythologies. While other belief systems sometimes enjoy the label of myth, the conversation around Christianity continues with vigor, suggesting that there is something profoundly real and transformative about its message. True discipleship can reinvigorate the spirit by encouraging individuals to experience the reality of God’s grace firsthand.
Faith, Science, and Modern Perceptions
In an age of rapid scientific advancement and technological innovation, the idea of adhering to a teaching that is over 2,000 years old may seem out of place. The term “fundamentalist” is often used pejoratively to describe those who hold firm to their beliefs. However, the contributions of Christians in every field demonstrate that faith and modernity need not be mutually exclusive.
It is essential to understand that both our material pursuits and our faith shape the human experience. While science makes propositional claims about the world through technology, faith offers deeply personal insights that forge a direct relationship between individuals and a transcendent God revealed in Christ.

Many churches have various committees dedicated to specific tasks, yet few focus on recognizing and nurturing the unique gifts that God has bestowed upon each individual. Prioritizing these talents can enrich both the faith community and the broader society.
The Enduring Message of Grace
Discipleship is an inviting way of life, open not only to pastors or church leaders but to every believer who has experienced the transformative power of Jesus—the Bread of Life and the living waters. His message of grace allows each of us to grow into the person God intends us to be, offering forgiveness and hope to all.
Though our world grows ever more sophisticated, the condition of the human heart often remains unchanged—prone to deceit and in need of healing. The message of Jesus has withstood countless challenges and continues to offer forgiveness, peace, and joy to people from all walks of life.
Ultimately, myths and ancient superstitions lack the power to fundamentally change lives. When believers share their firsthand experiences of the majesty and power of Jesus, they offer an invitation into a reality that transcends time—a reality where the Great Commission is not only relevant but vibrantly alive.
