Is My Work with Generative AI Responsible for Job Loss?
Many professionals are involved with generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) in their daily work, whether by using or even developing these tools. Rather than shying away from the subject, believers with expertise in technology are called to bring wisdom and thoughtful engagement into the workplace.
1. New Technology Often Disrupts, But Disruption Isn’t Inherently Negative
History shows that technological advancements can lead to dramatic changes in the workforce. For instance, mid-20th century theories predicted that our planet might struggle to sustain a growing population. However, innovations in agriculture—such as more resilient and productive crops—enabled us to feed 8 billion people today, even though fewer people are employed in farming. Similar shifts have been seen in manufacturing and other sectors. While some jobs have vanished, these advances have also transformed our economy and improved overall well-being.
In creative industries, gen AI is poised to offer fresh tools and techniques. This technology is emerging alongside traditional methods in design, much like how car manufacturers still balance hand-crafted models with modern digital methods. Even though gen AI might alter certain roles, human oversight and unique skills remain essential across disciplines.
The essential consideration is determining how AI is used and what impact it has on people’s lives.
2. Technology Can Either Reinforce or Undermine Our Creative Mandate
For those who believe in fulfilling humanity’s call to be fruitful and steward the earth, gen AI can serve as a valuable ally when used for constructive purposes. It can accelerate mundane tasks, enhance learning, and even push forward scientific breakthroughs by broadening our understanding of the natural world.
On the other hand, AI also carries risks. It may devalue human creativity by replicating artistic work too readily or substitute for genuine creative thought. There is also the concern that overreliance on these tools could lead to shallow interactions, replacing meaningful relationships with superficial connections.
It is crucial, therefore, to consider whether your work aids society and obeys the deeper mandate to nurture creativity and innovation. If your role promotes true benefits while supporting productive change, that work may well be justified—even if it leads to shifts in the job landscape.
3. Disruption Provides an Opportunity to Care for Others
When technological change results in job losses, approaching the situation with compassion becomes vital. Even in cases of unavoidable layoffs, it is possible to handle transitions with dignity by communicating clearly and engaging in genuine dialogue. Treating every individual with respect helps ensure that people are seen as valuable human beings rather than expendable resources.
For example, those creating AI tools for artistic work can:
- Inform the creative community about upcoming changes so they have time to adjust.
- Offer training sessions to help artists master new technologies.
- Provide discounted or complimentary access to digital tools to support artistic development.
- Create new channels for artists to earn a living in a shifting creative economy.
By taking such steps, we show care for our neighbors and help soften the disruptive edges of technological progress.
4. Making Decisions in Light of Faith, the Spirit, and Community
Even when technology offers broad benefits, it is important to remain guided by faith and a thoughtful conscience. If working with gen AI raises doubts or ethical concerns for you, it is perfectly acceptable to step away. The use of technology should always be balanced with intentionality and care.
When approached with the right intentions, generative AI can become a force for tremendous good. However, it requires careful stewardship by committed individuals who are motivated by values that promote both innovation and human dignity.
