Dear James
I recently visited a clothing‐optional beach for the first time last year. Stepping onto the sand, I felt both excited and apprehensive, worried that I might falter when facing a vast, empty coastline. Once I arrived and discovered the solitude, I slowly shed my clothes and embraced the freedom of simply being. Over time, I returned to several other beaches, growing more confident each visit while sharing space with a mix of clothed and unclothed souls. Lying there, with only the sound of the waves around me, I discovered a deep sense of peace.
Yet as the winter months set in, old feelings of shame and guilt resurfaced. Raised under the strict doctrines of Catholicism, I couldn’t shake the memory of disapproval that once loomed large, even from beyond. This inner conflict leaves me wondering: how should I reconcile the joy of freedom with these enduring doubts?
A Response
I found myself in a church on a recent Sunday morning, observing the Feast of Pentecost—a celebration of the Holy Spirit’s unpredictable journey. There, amidst the sacred fervor, I embraced the idea that the Spirit may alight upon anyone, anywhere, igniting life with its vibrant flame. This experience stirred in me a readiness to approach the matter with a blend of fervor and dogma.
Consider this: your body is a divine gift. In the proper setting—say, an uncluttered beach where nature reigns—you should be entitled to experience the world as freely as the first humans did in Eden, without a trace of shame. Think of the exuberance captured in a classic song lyric about the dawn of creation, where the early burst of life led us joyfully down to the sea, standing on the brink of liberation. That is the spirit of naturism: a celebration of your natural form, free from the constraints of clothing and the worries that often come with it.
If you struggle with the vulnerability of being unclothed, know that your apprehension is understandable. Yet remember the progress you have made—the confidence built with every visit to the shore, the tranquility found in the sound of the waves, and the steps taken toward embracing yourself fully. When guilt and old images of disapproval arise, especially echoes of those familiar voices from your past, challenge them. Instead, imagine the joy once seen in your innocence, the delight in being wholly yourself, and let nature affirm your existence.
In the words of a great poet who celebrated both divine grandeur and human passion, may you find the courage to shed not just your clothes but every lingering doubt. Let yourself be as free as a child, unburdened and unashamed, as you dance barefoot along the shoreline toward a sunrise that symbolizes boundless liberty.
