Dallas Jenkins Shoots Groundbreaking Crucifixion Scene in Italy for Season 6 of “The Chosen”

Dallas Jenkins, the creative force behind the widely acclaimed series “The Chosen,” has traveled to Italy to capture a striking crucifixion scene for the show’s sixth season. The production is taking place in the ancient city of Matera, chosen for its authentic historical atmosphere and practical filming advantages.

Filming of the crucifixion scene in Italy

Jenkins has described this segment as one of the most challenging undertakings the team has ever faced, both physically and logistically. The filming will span three intensive weeks, with an entire week dedicated solely to night scenes. According to him, the project demands exceptional effort on all fronts.

He emphasized that the upcoming portrayal is unlike anything seen before in depictions of the crucifixion. “We are about to film something very special and unprecedented,” Jenkins remarked, adding that anticipation is further heightened by plans to release the season’s finale as a standalone feature.

Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus in the series, shared insights into the emotional and physical challenges of bringing such a moment to life. He explained that his goal is to highlight the human side of Christ, striving to create a connection with the audience that transcends a purely ceremonial or religious presentation. Roumie noted that it is vital for the portrayal to remain relatable, ensuring the series communicates both depth and humanity.

The production team’s choice of Matera not only provides a backdrop steeped in historical authenticity but also a setting that closely resembles the urban landscapes of the first century. This unique locale offers a tangible connection to the past while maintaining the isolation necessary for such an intimate reconstruction.

Despite the immense logistical hurdles, Jenkins and his crew remain committed to delivering a visual narrative that is both technically sound and emotionally resonant. While balancing the practical demands of the shoot with the profound significance of the event, they are determined to capture a depiction that could be remembered as one of the greatest visual interpretations of Jesus’ life and ministry.

Season five of “The Chosen” concluded with the dramatic events surrounding the Last Supper and Judas’ betrayal, setting up the crucifixion as a defining moment of the series. As the production moves forward, both Jenkins and Roumie emphasize the importance of team camaraderie and creative integrity in bringing this pivotal scene to life.
