Jesus Statue Covered at Eid Celebration Sparks Religious Controversy in Monfalcone

In Monfalcone, Italy, an incident at the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Marcelliana has stirred growing tensions. During the Eid-Al-Adha festival—attended by nearly four thousand Muslims—a cloth was draped over a statue of Jesus Christ, an action that has unsettled the local Christian community.

Anna Maria Cisint, serving as a Lega MEP and voicing the concerns of her community, addressed the situation in a letter to Pope Leo XIV. In her words, the act represented an intolerable form of sacrilege and disrespect toward a cherished symbol of faith, leaving many Christians deeply wounded.

Cisint stressed the Church’s vital role as a source of spiritual and moral guidance. She argued that the actions of ecclesiastical institutions should never sow confusion or uncertainty about the core principles of Christianity. According to her, the incident has created both individual and communal disorientation in Monfalcone.

Additionally, Cisint cautioned against the potential dangers linked to a growing challenge against established Christian ordinances and values. She expressed specific concerns about certain groups, whose adherence to a stricter interpretation of Sharia might conflict with and undermine traditional Christian institutions and beliefs.
