New Discovery of Civil War-Era Mass Graves Beneath a Thessaloniki Park

On 13 June 2025, a grim discovery was made in northern Greece when local officials confirmed that 14 bodies, believed to be victims of civil war-era executions, were uncovered in a park in the Neapolis-Sykies suburb near Thessaloniki. Historians suspect these remains belong to political prisoners—accused communists and sympathizers—who were detained and executed at the notorious Yedi Kule prison, also known as Eptapyrgio, meaning “Seven Towers.”

The former Byzantine fortress, which later served as a detention center, was infamous for the torture and execution of prisoners during and in the aftermath of Greece’s Civil War (1946–1949). Unlike a previous discovery in the same area, where 33 unmarked graves held bodies placed side by side, the newly found remains were arranged in a disorganized heap, with torsos and heads separated. This disturbing detail suggests that the burials were carried out hastily.

During the operation of the prison, families were often not informed about the fate of their loved ones—some learned of the tragic outcomes only through newspaper reports while en route to the facility. In response to these findings, relatives are now calling for DNA analyses to identify the victims, although testing has not yet begun.
