The Angel of the Lord Encamps Around Those Who Fear Him
In Montevideo, Uruguay, Chris Swanson—director of crusades and development for Latin America at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA)—delivered an impassioned address at the Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family. Blending humor with biblical authority and an urgent spiritual message, he declared that the current struggle is not merely cultural but fundamentally spiritual.
Founded by the renowned evangelist Billy Graham, the BGEA has spent over seven decades proclaiming the Gospel through international evangelism, pastoral training, and various crisis response initiatives. Swanson, who was raised in Argentina, has experienced a long marriage and raised three adopted children. He recalled his own pastoral and missionary journey to emphasize that debates about life, family, and faith transcend political conflicts. As he referenced scriptural teachings, he reminded the audience that while culture may serve as the battleground, the real war unfolds in the heavenly realms.

Prayer as a Powerful First Response
Drawing inspiration from the account of Peter in the scriptures, Swanson revisited the narrative of the early Church’s fervent response to crisis. He recalled how, in the midst of Peter’s imprisonment, the believers engaged in relentless and wholehearted prayer. Emphasizing that many believers now view prayer as a last resort, he urged them to adopt a more expectant approach. Reflecting on the original Greek term for the intensity of prayer, he noted that true prayer stretches the heart beyond its limits. Swanson stressed that praying without anticipation robs it of divine power, recounting how Peter’s liberation came only after persistent faith-filled prayer.
A Call to Action for the Church
Revisiting the biblical command to “arise and put on,” Swanson connected Peter’s divine commission to the present-day call for Christians to awaken to their mission. He insisted that it is time for the Church to rise from inactivity. Speaking directly to leaders, lawmakers, and pastors present at the congress, he emphasized the urgency of doing more now, with the reminder that time is short and the return of Jesus is imminent.
Swanson cautioned against actions that stray from scriptural truth, asserting that convictions rooted solely in popular sentiment or good intentions lack divine endorsement. Instead, he maintained that true progress must be guided by the revealed Word of God.
Emphasizing Evangelism at the Forefront of Mission
Representing the BGEA, Swanson underscored that every form of Christian engagement—whether political, social, or personal—should ultimately point toward the fulfillment of the Great Commission. He reminded those in any arena, from governmental halls to everyday encounters, that making disciples remains paramount. According to him, the essence of the Church’s mission is to keep the focus on the Gospel, ensuring that every action is anchored in the pursuit of spiritual truth rather than merely opposing cultural trends.
Building a Continental Vision in Montevideo
The congress brought together influential figures from over 15 nations, including parliamentarians, activists, and community leaders, all striving to forge a cooperative agenda in the defense of biblical values. The gathering has been characterized by a call for unity, deliberate prayer, and the nurturing of emerging leaders who adhere to a Christian worldview.
In closing his remarks, Swanson urged believers to remain steadfast in proclaiming Jesus as the sole path to truth and life. He affirmed that as long as reverence for God continues, divine protection and guidance will prevail, reinforcing that the Church’s mission remains unaltered by the shifting tides of culture.
