Brazilian Influence in West Hartford’s Chocolate Scene
Priscilla Pedrosa has nurtured a passion for chocolate ever since she began crafting bonbons at the age of 12. Even as a young girl, she found that her handmade treats quickly won the hearts of her neighbors, with friends lining up outside her home to get a taste.
As she grew older, Pedrosa balanced a house-cleaning job with her growing interest in chocolate-making. With unwavering support from her husband—who even built a dedicated kitchen in their basement—she transformed her hobby into a promising side business. Recognizing her talent, her husband arranged a meeting with the owner of a former business at 282 Park Road, setting the stage for a new opportunity to turn her passion into a full-time endeavor.
Choccodiva Confections: A Sweet Debut
On May 30, Pedrosa celebrated the soft opening of Choccodiva Confections at 282 Park Road in West Hartford. The shop’s name was inspired by a friend’s affectionate nickname for her, “the diva of chocolate,” capturing both her flair and expertise.
At Choccodiva, guests can indulge in an array of treats that extend beyond traditional chocolate desserts. Alongside cakes, cake pops, lollipops, and honey bread, the menu now includes ice cream and freshly brewed coffee. Every item is prepared by hand every day, without preservatives and with as few artificial colorings as possible, ensuring a fresh and wholesome experience.
A Brazilian Twist on a Classic Favorite
A signature offering at the shop is the brigadeiro—a truffle-like confection rooted in Brazilian tradition. Made with condensed milk, dark chocolate, and a touch of butter, the mixture is gently cooked until it reaches a boil. Once cooled, it’s meticulously rolled into small balls that provide a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. These delectable treats are then adorned with an assortment of toppings such as Mini M&M’s, coconut flakes, or strawberry-flavored shavings. Pedrosa’s creative approach even sees brigadeiro used as a coating for cake pops and as a luxurious layer in her Dubai chocolate creations.
A Sweet Success in West Hartford
Since opening her doors, Pedrosa has been heartened by the enthusiastic response from the community. “It’s something I had been praying for. I just thank God for everything,” she reflects, describing the overwhelming turnout as both a blessing and a testament to her craft.
Choccodiva Confections welcomes visitors from Tuesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. With its blend of classic chocolate desserts and unique Brazilian influences, the shop offers West Hartford a taste experience that is both familiar and refreshingly innovative.
