Athletes Cross the Holy Door: A Spiritual Pilgrimage Through Sport

Faith and Fitness Unite in the Jubilee of Sport

This jubilant year of hope has drawn athletes from across the world to Rome, celebrating the deep connection between physical strength and spiritual growth. Olympians, Paralympians, young sports enthusiasts, and families gathered for an unforgettable event, during which Pope Leo XIV referred to the participants as “Missionaries of Hope.” He highlighted how sports can cultivate teamwork, mindfulness, and resilience—teaching even champions to rise after each fall.

The celebration featured a sacred Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, a pilgrimage past the historic Holy Door, and a memorable debut by the Giro d’Italia cyclists within the Vatican. Whether through football matches or the spirited Caritas Cup, the event showcased sport as a joyful demonstration of faith, inclusion, and unity.

Under the leadership of Athletica Vaticana, the Church’s own multi-sport team, the Jubilee of Sport powerfully reminds us that nurturing the body can be a path to enriching the soul.
