America’s Unrest: A Hidden Classroom Crisis

Reclaiming the Classroom: The Root of America’s Unrest

Imagine restoring our schools as centers for truth—a place where education nurtures character as much as it imparts knowledge.

Dr. Kent Ingle

Across the country today, the sounds of riots, division, and violence echo in our streets and on our screens. While surface-level remedies are debated and enacted, the deeper malady remains unaddressed. This unrest is not a spontaneous outburst, but rather a natural consequence of long-term moral and spiritual decay—a decay that has been fostered deliberately in our classrooms.

For many generations, American education served a dual purpose. It was meant to impart academic knowledge and to build character through timeless values such as respect for authority, love of country, and personal responsibility. Schools, in partnership with families and communities, once aimed to mold young people into ethical citizens and future leaders. Somewhere along the way, that mission was set aside in favor of promoting comfort and subjective ideals.

My experience as a university president has shown me the toll this shift takes on young people. I have met many capable and bright students who, after years in institutions that neglected moral formation, arrive yearning for purpose. One student confessed, “I don’t even know what I believe anymore. It feels like everything is up for debate.” This uncertainty mirrors the broader educational trend where the pursuit of objective truth has given way to personal opinion and ideological relativism.

In classrooms once dedicated to the discovery of what is true, good, and right, educators increasingly substituted wisdom for agenda, and steadfast principles for fleeting feelings. Instead of learning to honor life and responsibility, many young people were taught that truth is whatever feels right in the moment, without acknowledging any higher authority.

The consequences of this shift are evident everywhere—in the breakdown of family values, the disregard for law and order, and a cultural climate that prizes victimhood and division over unity and accountability. This gradual erosion did not happen overnight. For decades, radical influences reshaped education to serve ideological purposes rather than cultivating moral citizens. When voices of conviction fell silent, even institutions that once stood for righteousness—such as the Church—failed to speak up, and the moral compass of our nation was lost.

Imagine what could be achieved if we reclaimed our classrooms as sanctuaries of truth. Picture schools that partner with families to build character, emphasize the value of life and virtue, and encourage students to seek wisdom rather than conform to fleeting ideological trends. A generation raised on these principles would be equipped to build unity and progress instead of division and destruction.

This is not merely a battle for our schools—it is a struggle for the future of our nation. The violence and discord we witness today are not themselves the problem, but symptoms of a deeper, systemic decay. The remedy begins by restoring truth in our classrooms and realigning education with enduring moral values.

If we wish to rebuild America, the transformation must start with the minds and hearts of our children. The moment has come to shift our focus from treating symptoms to addressing the cause. By reclaiming our schools for truth, we can begin to restore the moral foundations that will unite and strengthen our society for generations to come.
