Study Reveals Rising Trend in Planned Parenthood Clinic Closures

Dozens of Planned Parenthoods Have Shut Down While Abortion Numbers Soar

A recent report reveals that the number of Planned Parenthood centers across the United States has reached a record low. Over the past four years, the network has seen a steady decline, with the current total of brick-and-mortar facilities dropping to 509 as of May 2025. This decrease follows a period when the organization operated 554 facilities in 2022 and 2023 and 536 centers in 2024.

The report, released by a pro-life advocacy group, details that in the last four years 66 facilities have closed permanently while 10 have temporarily shuttered. Although 20 new locations have opened, the overall trend has been downward for over two decades.

It is noteworthy that these facility closures have coincided with a record number of abortions. The organization reported performing 402,230 abortions in its 2023–2024 annual report, all while receiving nearly $800 million in public funding. The rise in abortion figures, despite the narrowing physical presence, has been attributed to the increased use of abortion pills, such as mifepristone.

Critics claim that Planned Parenthood is taking advantage of the digital age. One representative argued that the organization uses online platforms to find loopholes in state abortion laws by offering virtual appointments and mailing abortion drugs—even in areas where such medications are heavily restricted. The critics assert that this strategy not only circumvents existing state restrictions but also raises serious ethical and legal concerns.

Amid these developments, there are ongoing discussions in Congress about a bill that could remove federal funding from Planned Parenthood. Lawmakers have warned that such actions might force the closure of as many as 200 facilities. Meanwhile, the centers have been closing in both states with strict abortion limits and those with minimal restrictions.

For example, in Iowa—where abortion is banned after six weeks—seven facilities have closed since 2022. Similarly, states like Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Illinois each saw multiple closures, despite having few or no legal abortion limits. Other states with stricter laws, such as Florida, Indiana, and Missouri, have also experienced facility shutdowns. In addition, states including Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah have seen a reduction in the number of operational centers.

Even as over five dozen Planned Parenthood clinics have closed in recent years, some of these losses have been counterbalanced by new openings. California leads in this regard, having welcomed several new centers during the same period. States such as Kansas, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Tennessee, Texas, and Missouri have also added new facilities or seen previously shuttered clinics reopen.

The contrasting trends of declining physical locations and record high abortion numbers continue to fuel debates over Planned Parenthood’s practices and funding strategies as lawmakers and advocacy groups reassess the path forward.
