Introduction
Throughout my professional journey, I have experienced God’s guidance in surprising ways—transitioning from accounting roles to leadership positions across diverse industries, from fast food to energy, and now to a fintech startup. In every step, whether at work or in church, He has granted opportunities to serve and lead with humility.
Embracing Servant Leadership
Servant leadership has emerged as both an influential and much-discussed model over the past several decades. Even for those who view the Bible as a flawless and profound source of truth, its insights can sometimes seem to contradict common sense. Yet, because God’s wisdom surpasses human understanding, a true leader must align their thoughts and actions with divine guidance as revealed in scripture.
This divine perspective reveals that leadership and service are not mutually exclusive—they coexist. We are encouraged to put others ahead of ourselves. Below are six thought-provoking principles on service, selflessness, and sacrifice that transform the way we view leadership.
1. Achieving Greatness by Serving Others
The teachings highlight that true greatness comes from serving everyone. Those who aspire to be leaders must embrace a life of selfless sacrifice. By setting an example of humility and prioritizing the needs of others, leaders put into practice the profound truth that true leadership is rooted in service. Whether a CEO works long hours, a church organizer handles everyday tasks, or a plant manager adjusts schedules to benefit the entire team, each act of service reinforces this timeless principle.
2. Finding Joy Through Generosity
An enduring lesson is that happiness flourishes when we give rather than receive. This principle encourages us to extend our hand even to those who have little to offer in return. True joy is found not in receiving gifts or accolades, but in investing time and energy into supporting the most vulnerable. Whether mentoring someone new to the field, empowering an employee, or taking a risk on a promising newcomer, leaders discover that selfless giving paves the way for lasting fulfillment.
3. Rising by Embracing Humility
Sometimes, the path to higher achievement requires us to humble ourselves first. Just as the greatest example of sacrificial leadership involved a journey from heaven’s heights to the lows of human experience, we too can learn from our moments of service in less prestigious roles. My own early years in the service industry, where I performed every task with diligence, taught me invaluable lessons that later guided my decisions as a leader. Those challenging experiences became the cornerstone for growth and excellence.
4. Valuing the Journey’s End Over Its Beginning
A reflective insight from ancient wisdom is that the conclusion of a journey can be richer and more rewarding than the beginning. The satisfaction of completing a meaningful career or the joy of returning home after a long trip illustrates that the final chapter, when all is accomplished, surpasses the uncertain early steps. By looking back on achievements and the ways in which divine provision revealed itself, we can celebrate the fulfillment that comes from a well-lived life.
5. Securing True Victory Through Surrender
At a critical juncture before the ultimate sacrifice, the example of yielding one’s will teaches a powerful lesson in true leadership. In moments of intense challenge, humble submission to a higher purpose can bring about victory that goes beyond personal gain. Whether it means accepting difficult decisions at work, waiting patiently through setbacks, or letting conflicts subside for the collective good, everyday acts of yielding reveal a strength that transforms both leaders and their teams.
6. Growing Through Sacrificial Learning
Even one who is divinely inspired finds value in learning through experience. The greatest example of servant leadership illustrates that even in suffering, there is room to learn obedience and gain wisdom. Every challenge, from minor setbacks in a startup to major career pivots, is an opportunity to develop new insights. Personal experiences have shown me that relying on relationships, having faith during lean times, and learning from hardships not only builds resilience but also enriches leadership with authentic insight.
Reflecting on a Servant’s Heart
The journey toward aligning one’s mindset with divine truth reveals the profound interconnectedness of service, sacrifice, and surrender in leadership. By embracing a perspective that puts the needs of others first, we follow a model of leadership that is both transformative and deeply rooted in biblical truth. In reflecting on the extensive range of service—from the profound sacrifices of the ultimate servant leader to our daily acts of care—we discover that true leadership is defined not by power or privilege, but by our willingness to serve selflessly.
