Emulating Jesus’ Service in the Workplace

Introduction

Throughout my career, I have experienced an unexpected journey that led me from accounting roles to leadership positions at well-known companies and now into the dynamic world of fintech. In every twist—whether in the workplace or in church—God has graciously provided countless opportunities for me to serve and guide others.

Servant leadership has emerged as one of the most transformative and debated leadership approaches of the past four decades. For believers who trust in the perfection, profit, and purity of biblical truths, some teachings may appear to challenge conventional wisdom. Yet, because God’s ways transcend our own, a true leader must continually align personal perspectives with His revealed will in scripture rather than conform to human expectations.

Jesus’s example shows us that leadership is not at odds with service. By placing the needs of others above our own, we reflect a powerful paradox: we can lead effectively by serving selflessly. Here are six enlightening scriptural insights on service, surrender, and sacrifice.

1. Greatness is Achieved by Serving Others

Jesus taught his followers that true greatness comes not from being served but by serving everyone. He exemplified this by choosing a life of sacrifice and selflessness—even though He is the Sovereign, He opted to serve, giving everything for the sake of many. In practice, this means that leaders who work early mornings, long evenings, or even handle tasks typically reserved for others demonstrate the genuine characteristics of servant leadership.

2. Increased Happiness Comes from Giving

The call to give rather than receive reveals a deep truth: there is a profound blessing in offering help. Instead of seeking personal comfort alone, our fulfillment grows when we support those in need—even when they may have little to offer in return. Whether it’s experienced leaders mentoring newcomers, executives investing in future talent, or managers taking risks by hiring those who may not seem like an obvious choice, true servant leadership is marked by a readiness to give selflessly.

3. Advancement Often Requires Humility

The journey of the eternal Son illustrates that sometimes the path to exaltation begins with a descent—from the peaks of glory to the depths of trial. My own early career, where I worked on the front lines despite holding advanced qualifications, taught me the value of humility. Those challenging days, working directly with customers and colleagues, profoundly shaped my ability to make better decisions later as a leader.

4. A Joyful Conclusion Outshines a Promising Beginning

Ancient wisdom reminds us that the end of a journey can be even more fulfilling than its start. Just as the last day of travel brings a bittersweet joy when returning home, a well-lived career can culminate in greater satisfaction than the uncertain excitement of its beginning. Reflecting on the milestones along the way, we can appreciate how every challenge and blessing contributed to our ultimate reward.

5. Victory and Freedom Stem from Surrender

Even in the final hours of His earthly life, Jesus demonstrated the transformative power of yielding to God’s will. In the midst of profound pain and difficulty, His submission led to the greatest victory ever known. In our everyday lives, choosing to yield—whether it means accepting an unfair decision, being patient for long-promised recognition, or de-escalating conflict—can unveil a strength that comes only from selfless surrender.

6. Continual Learning Enhances Sacrificial Service

Jesus, although divine, embraced learning through His experiences and challenges. His journey attests that wisdom is not incompatible with struggle, and even the most knowledgeable among us benefit from learning during tough times. My transition from corporate roles to leading a small tech start-up was marked by lessons in resilience, faith, and the power of relationships—even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

Reflections on Servant Leadership

A true servant leader seeks to harmonize personal thinking with the divine perspective as revealed in scripture, steadily developing a balanced, Christian worldview. When we consider the extent of Christ’s commitment to serving others—with every decision underscoring His selfless nature—we are reminded that leadership founded on sacrifice, surrender, and humility is the most impactful. God’s continual focus on others, paired with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, inspires us to progress steadily toward greater personal and spiritual growth while serving those around us.
