Artist’s Innovative Mural Transforms a Sacred Entrance
When New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral sought to renew its atmosphere, artist Adam Cvijanovic was tasked with an extraordinary assignment: to create a mural that would breathe new life into the venerable space. Cvijanovic, well-known for his large-scale works, recognized that his commission was part of a long tradition of sacred art, which made the challenge all the more significant.
A Contemporary Tribute with Historical Roots
Drawing from the legacy of old-world masters while forging a distinctly American identity, Cvijanovic designed a piece entitled “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding.” The mural now graces the entrance hall of a church that many consider to be the spiritual heart of America. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic Archbishop of New York, recalled that even longtime admirers of the cathedral felt the entrance had grown uninviting over time. “There is enough gloom in the world,” he explained, “so when you enter a house of worship, it should feel warm and uplifting.”
Initially, the cardinal envisioned a depiction of the Apparition at Knock—a mysterious event in 1879 in an Irish village, where locals reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary. This miraculous occurrence coincided with St. Patrick’s opening its doors to a predominantly Irish immigrant community, a historical nuance that added extra depth to the proposed artwork.
However, once Cvijanovic took the helm, the mural evolved beyond that original concept. Dolan recalled the artist’s proposal to celebrate the perpetual journey of God’s people. He noted how figures such as the Lamb of God, Mary, Joseph, and John were cast as celestial immigrants visiting the humble village of Knock, and even recalled the biblical narrative of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph finding refuge in Egypt. This reinterpretation naturally expanded to honor the spirit of immigration—a cornerstone of the New York narrative and the broader American dream.
An Inclusive Vision for a Diverse Community
The finished mural intertwines scenes from the Apparition at Knock with portraits of key figures from the Church’s American history, including Mother Frances Cabrini, the first American citizen to be canonized. There are stirring depictions of nineteenth-century immigrants arriving in New York, as well as images honoring modern-day first responders, many of whom share a common heritage with those early settlers. Perhaps most striking are the contemporary portrayals of newcomers, symbolizing the hope and resilience of today’s society.
When questioned about the potential for controversy, Cardinal Dolan acknowledged that while the work was not crafted as a political statement, it has naturally drawn diverse interpretations. He admitted that, in recent times, the discussion around immigration and the treatment of those seeking a better life has grown more charged. The cardinal’s own reflections on past and present injustices—echoing memories of neighborhoods that rebuffed earlier generations—underline his belief that immigrants deserve respect and compassion.
A Message Beyond the Walls
The revitalization of St. Patrick’s Cathedral is not limited to its stunning restoration work completed a few years back; it now also encompasses this bold new artistic vision. Cvijanovic hopes the mural will resonate not only with the devout but also with the wider community of New York City. He has seen people of diverse beliefs, from staunch atheists to members of various faiths, embrace the work as a celebration of humanity in all its forms.
For Cardinal Dolan, the renewed entrance is much more than an aesthetic upgrade—it is a visible commitment to welcome and honor all who pass through its doors. In his view, the true measure of his legacy will not be found in the restored stone or the carefully crafted art, but in the extent to which the cathedral greets every visitor with genuine hospitality.
