In White Sox Stadium Broadcast, Pope Leo XIV Delivers a Message of Hope
During a live broadcast at the White Sox baseball stadium in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV addressed American audiences—especially young people—urging them to find hope and meaning in life through a personal relationship with God and by serving others. He emphasized that for those experiencing depression or sadness, the healing love of God offers genuine solace and reassurance.
The event, organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago to commemorate his recent election, took place in his hometown at the home stadium of his favorite major league team. Alongside his inspiring message, the program celebrated his roots with performances by the Leo Catholic High School Choir and a musician from Peru, as well as discussions featuring a former teacher and a high school classmate and Augustinian colleague.
“To share that message of hope with one another—in outreach, in service, in looking for ways to make our world a better place—gives true life to all of us, and is a sign of hope for the whole world.”
The celebration also highlighted a unique blend of Catholic tradition and baseball culture. In a gesture that underscored this fusion, the White Sox extended a special invitation to Pope Leo to throw a ceremonial first pitch at an upcoming game.
Elected on May 8, the 69-year-old former Robert Prevost is the first American to hold the papacy in the church’s 2,000-year history. His career has been marked by his service as an Augustinian missionary and minister in Peru, and he succeeded Pope Francis following his passing in late April.
Concluding his video address, Pope Leo XIV expressed his gratitude for the communal celebration of faith. “When I see each and every one of you, when I see how people gather together to celebrate their faith, I discover for myself how much hope there is in the world,” he remarked.
The program was rounded out by a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Archbishop of Chicago, which further reinforced the theme of hope and renewal in the community.
