Hayley Williams Criticizes the CCM Industry Amid Michael Tait Allegations
Recently, as sexual assault allegations emerged against Contemporary Christian Music star Michael Tait, Hayley Williams has launched a scathing critique of the entire genre. Williams asserts that the industry has long enabled the behavior that Tait is now accused of, ultimately exposing a culture that exploits the faith and vulnerability of its followers.
In a post shared on her Instagram Story, the Paramore frontwoman highlighted details from an investigative report that questioned Tait’s conduct. “There are so many things I need to say and countless people whose lives may have been irreversibly changed by him and by an industry that empowered his actions,” she wrote. She continued, “I grew up around this. I am not afraid of these people—most of them have already written me off. How many more similar stories will surface before we acknowledge that capitalizing on people’s faith and vulnerability is the true sin?”
This outcry followed a recent report by a Christian news outlet, which summarized a lengthy investigation into Tait’s past. Over a span of two and a half years, claims emerged from three individuals accusing him of grooming and sexual assault between 2004 and 2014. Additional details painted a picture of long-standing substance abuse by Tait—despite his previous proclamations of sobriety and abstinence through his music.
In a subsequent statement, Tait expressed deep remorse and admitted to a history of substance abuse and inappropriate behavior. He acknowledged having “deceived my family, friends, fans and even misled my bandmates about aspects of my life” for years before eventually seeking treatment. Reflecting on his past, he said, “I was, for the most part, living two distinctly different lives. I was not the same person onstage Sunday night that I was at home on Monday… By His grace I can say that for the past six months, I have lived a singular life, one of utter brokenness and total dependence on a loving and merciful God.”
The Guardian’s investigation further detailed allegations that Tait had secretly drugged and molested a minor, and it cast a wider net on how the broader CCM industry allowed his misconduct to go unchecked for decades. In her statement, Williams condemned this systemic failure. “This is a man whose entire faith identity is built upon a faulty structure of self-hatred, all in an effort to please a system that would rather hide abhorrent behavior for over 20 years and profit from it, instead of facing the reality that being gay is not the issue,” she explained. “I hope the CCM industry crumbles. And to all of you who knew and did nothing—I bet I’ve got your number. If you aren’t angry, then maybe it’s time to question why.”
Tait’s journey in the music world began with his work in DC Talk, leading him to join the Newsboys in 2009—a tenure that ended abruptly in January. His departure has since left his former bandmates feeling betrayed. In a joint statement after the investigation’s revelations, they expressed feelings of horror, heartbreak, and anger, noting that their families had been deceived for years.
As the CCM industry faces mounting scrutiny over its handling of these issues, Williams’s blunt remarks add to a growing chorus demanding accountability and reform within a genre that many feel has long prioritized profit over the sanctity of its message.
