Let Biden Leave in Peace—Is Mockery Necessary?

A Conservative Lament

An opinion piece by a well-known commentator recently took aim at the left’s harsh treatment of a former president, suggesting that his legacy should be all but erased with scorn. Given the considerable challenges President Biden has faced recently, such a somber tone might seem fitting. However, because he is still with us, mourning him as if he were already gone seems a bit premature.

As a lifelong conservative, I do not write in support of Biden, nor do I seek to defend him. Rather, I pose a question to fellow conservatives—especially those who share our Christian values: despite clear evidence over the years that Biden was neither mentally nor physically equipped to lead, why continue to take delight in his well-documented struggles?

Moving Beyond Gloating

Conservatives spent many months prior to the 2024 election warning about the former president’s obvious decline, while much of the mainstream media conveniently painted a picture of sharp competence. In the end, the American electorate saw through the facade and made a choice based on reality rather than spin. With this electoral outcome, conservatives have already proven their point.

Yet many continue to dwell on Biden’s cognitive missteps and physical frailties with a tone of derision and triumphalism. Although some writings effectively argue that a network of aides, pundits, and even his own family propped him up, one must ask what is truly gained by incessant mockery. Biden, now reduced to a relic of the past and a diminished figure, no longer commands the office he once held.

A Call for Compassion

The time has come to recognize that Biden is not just a political figure but a human being—a husband, father, and grandfather—facing the inevitable realities of aging. While history may judge his presidency harshly, our critique should not devolve into unsympathetic mockery. There is a distinct difference between defending our beliefs through reasoned critique and wielding ridicule as a weapon for amusement.

Some conservatives insist on continually reminding the public of the media’s missteps and the deep-seated failures of the Democratic establishment. Though accountability is important, there comes a moment when such headlines shift from tools of scrutiny to instruments of vindictiveness. In doing so, we risk diminishing our own moral stature.

Looking Ahead with Dignity

It is time for conservatives to turn the page. While we must certainly acknowledge the past, we should also accept that Biden now occupies a diminished role in our political landscape. The party that now holds power deserves to govern without the constant reminder of its predecessor’s shortcomings.

Especially for those of us guided by Christian teachings, this is a moment for prayer—not just for political vindication, but for genuine goodwill. We should pray for Biden’s recovery if possible, and if not, for his remaining years to be peaceful and dignified. His plight is a reminder that all of us eventually face physical decline and mental deterioration.

At 82, Biden may well be nearing the final chapters of his life. This is not a time for our cheers or jeers, but a time for mercy. True conservatism calls on us to rise above cruelty and to stand firm both politically and morally. Biden has long been out of the realm of leadership, and for conservatives, that realization should be more than sufficient.
