Nigeria at the Crossroads of Darkness
Nigeria now finds itself at a constant juncture of gloom, where a lack of moral integrity has penetrated every level of society – inside the church and beyond. A once-bright beacon of hope now seems dimmed by compromised values. When wrongdoing prevails, divine judgment inevitably follows. No amount of quick fixes, prayers, or fasting can repair a nation that has abandoned its commitment to doing what is right.
As the noted commentator Milan Hubl once observed, erasing a people’s memory and history gradually strips away their identity. In Nigeria, each new transition in leadership only deepens a vicious cycle of decline, confronting us with a bitter reality: change in government hardly alters the system because the fundamental values have been lost.
Nationhood falters when leaders become mere opportunists – traders in ideology who exploit public woes for personal profit. Poverty and hunger obscure the line between truth and deception, making it all too easy for exploitative minds to manipulate desperate citizens. History is replete with examples of totalitarian regimes weaponizing suffering to subdue their people, leaving citizens disoriented and unable to recognize the source of their plight.
A Vision of Desolation
In July 2020, I awoke from a distressing vision: a landscape of abandoned neighborhoods resembling a war-torn city. Streets were flooded, buildings crumbled, and the air was heavy with decay. There was neither nourishment nor relief, only a haunting emptiness that symbolized not just physical ruin, but the collapse of moral values. Though five years have passed since that nightmarish glimpse, while some areas may share elements of that ruin, the deeper damage is spiritual – a total severance from righteousness.
The Urgent Call for Moral Renewal
Righteousness must once again become the cornerstone of our society. It calls on those in power to ensure fair and transparent elections; it demands that judges resist the temptation to trade justice for financial gain; it insists that public funds be honored rather than misappropriated; and it challenges religious leaders to turn away from corrupt alliances and secret societies in favor of truth.
Moreover, true moral integrity means that pastors and spiritual leaders relinquish any involvement in practices that undermine the sanctity of their calling. It is a call for every Nigerian to champion values such as love, fairness, justice, and truth. We must reject nepotism and deceit, and instead, unite behind leaders who prioritize service over personal enrichment.
When we resolve to embrace righteousness, we lay the foundation for a revitalized nation. As the proverb reminds us, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” Only by restoring our commitment to moral integrity can Nigeria truly rise from the shadows of its past and build a future worthy of its potential.
The time has come for each of us to be the agents of change our country so desperately needs.
