Dear James: Reveling in the Freedom of Nude Beach Days

Dear James, I Love Going Naked on the Beach

Last year, I took my first trip to a naturist beach. Despite my nervousness during the walk there, the vast emptiness of the surroundings eventually gave me the courage to shed my clothes. Over time, I’ve returned to several such beaches, gradually building confidence as I embraced the freedom of being exposed—in solitude or among others who choose to wear or not wear clothing. There’s a profound peace in lying bare on the sand, listening to the constant murmur of the waves.

However, with the arrival of winter, familiar feelings of shame and guilt began to creep back in. Growing up under strict Catholic teachings, I now find the memory of my mother’s disapproval echoing in my mind, even though she has been gone for years. It poses a genuine dilemma: how can I reconcile these deep-seated sentiments with the liberating experience of being fully natural?

A Sacred Perspective on the Natural Self

Recently, during a Pentecost celebration at church, I witnessed a symbolic reminder of the Holy Spirit’s unpredictable presence—its freedom to move and settle wherever it desires. This experience stirred in me a renewed resolve to reconnect with my Catholic roots while also embracing a more open, less dogmatic view on nudity.

Our bodies are gifts, meant to be appreciated without shame in the right context. Imagine being as unclothed as Adam once was in the Garden of Eden—a return to a state of pure, unburdened existence. This raw freedom, akin to a fresh beginning marked by a race toward the sea at dawn, truly embodies the spirit of nudism. It’s about releasing the confines that limit us, letting go of everything that suppresses our true selves, and allowing life’s natural beauty to shine forth.

I admit that shedding all my clothes makes me feel more vulnerable than comfortable at times. Still, if you have already embarked on this journey of self-improvement and liberation, hold on to that newfound confidence. The familiar pull of guilt and memories of stern admonishments might try to creep in, but they must be firmly resisted. Instead, envision the delight of your earliest, carefree self—a version of you that relished every moment without inhibition. Celebrate the beauty of existence as it unfolds on your skin, much like timeless verses that speak of a divine embrace over the world.

In embracing this natural state, we open ourselves up to an authentic celebration of life and liberty, gently leaving behind the shadows of past constraints.
