US Citizen Arrested in Connection with Firebombing Plot at Embassy Branch
A U.S. citizen faces charges for allegedly attempting to ignite a firebomb attack on a branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The suspect, 28-year-old Joseph Neumeyer—a dual citizen of the United States and Germany—was taken into custody at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Sunday, following an incident on May 19. If found guilty, he could serve a minimum of five years in prison, with potential penalties reaching up to 20 years behind bars, as well as a fine of up to $250,000.
Details of the Incident
According to authorities, Neumeyer approached the Tel Aviv embassy branch, reportedly spat on a security guard, and abandoned a backpack containing three Molotov cocktails. He was later intercepted at his hotel and subsequently deported back to the United States, where he was brought before a magistrate in the Eastern District of New York.
Social Media Revelations
Evidence gathered from Neumeyer’s online activity indicates that he had encouraged others to join him in his plan to set the embassy ablaze. His provocative posts included incendiary slogans and direct threats, with statements calling for harm against Americans and a dismissive reference to Western nations. Additional online content attributed to an account linked to him also contained disturbing threats against President Donald Trump.
Official Reactions
Law enforcement officials and federal authorities have strongly condemned the planned attack. A leading prosecutor stated that the defendant is charged with orchestrating a potentially devastating assault targeting an American diplomatic facility and issuing threats that extend to American citizens and the U.S. president. An FBI director underscored that such violent and extremist behavior will not be tolerated, either domestically or abroad, and reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that the suspect faces the full force of the law.
Context of Rising Tensions
This incident follows separate violent events in recent weeks. In one case, a shooting near a prominent cultural museum in Washington, D.C., resulted in the deaths of two staff members connected to the Israeli Embassy. The suspect in that attack, a 30-year-old individual, was apprehended shortly after the shooting and was reported to have expressed political motives online, denouncing the policies of the Israeli and U.S. governments amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
