What Happens If I Continue to Sin?

Struggling with Persistent Sin

Each believer faces the ongoing battle against sin. No Christian has ever completely overcome the struggle—or will ever entirely escape it—in this fallen world. The apostle Paul confessed his own internal conflict, noting that he often does the very things he does not wish to do. As his experience confirms, our continual capture by sin stems from three key issues.

Understanding the Depth of Sin

When sin encircles our lives and we barely react, it is usually because we fail to comprehend three critical realities: the severity of our sin, the underlying purpose it serves, and the intense detestation God feels towards it. If we grasp these truths, we will be compelled to resist sin with all our might. A notable early twentieth-century evangelist once declared his unyielding determination to battle sin in every possible way, even resorting to the drastic imagery that our own physical members must be sacrificed if they cause us to stumble—a concept originally taught by Jesus.

Three Steps to Overcome Sin’s Grip

1. Seek the Holy Spirit’s Conviction

Begin by praying earnestly for the Holy Spirit to unveil the sins hidden in your heart and daily routines. Sometimes we become so desensitized by habitual wrongdoing—especially in a culture that often normalizes such behavior—that we fail to recognize its true nature. A period of sincere prayer can help you see the transgressions you have been rationalizing for far too long.

2. Recognize the True Aim of Sin

Sins, regardless of size, serve a common enemy: they work to subvert Christ’s authority in our lives. Whether the sin appears minor or grievous, its ultimate purpose is to displace Christ’s rightful reign and invite rebellion against His teachings. This understanding reminds us that every act of sin is essentially an attempt to undermine the sovereignty of good.

3. Recall God’s Holy Aversion to Sin

It is vital to remember that God harbors a profound and holy repulsion for sin. The Scriptures describe a list of behaviors that are especially detestable to Him. Even in our moments of transgression, recognize that Jesus—who bore the weight of divine judgment for our sake—views each sin with righteous abhorrence, while simultaneously loving us beyond measure. Such a truth should inspire us to reject sin with urgency and deep conviction.

A Call to Personal Battle

Many Christians decry the pervasive secular and hedonistic values of our time, often speaking of a battle for the culture. We remind each other that our fight is not merely against external forces, but also against the internal presence of evil. The challenge, however, extends beyond impassioned sermons about worldly sin; it includes confronting the personal footholds of sin in our own lives. As we become increasingly aware of our own failings through the Spirit’s gentle conviction, let us turn decisively to Christ’s Word, rejecting the rebellion of this world through the power He provides.
