Death Looms: Are You Ready?

A Journey of Reflection

My wife and I recently wrapped up a month-long road trip with our family. We drove through North Carolina, where our youngest daughter competed in two athletic events (she triumphed in the second), and then spent several weeks in Florida. In years past, flying was our choice of travel, but nowadays we prefer the comfort of our own SUV.

Along the way, we encountered several roadside billboards addressing various aspects of Christian teaching—from biblical truths to moral issues. One billboard in particular left a lasting impression. It featured a flatline from a heart monitor alongside the simple, uncompromising message: “After you die, you will meet God.” A brief reference to a well-known biblical verse underscored the reminder that each person faces death once, followed by judgment—a reality often left unspoken.

Confronting the Inevitability of Death

No one can escape the eventual knock of death. Beyond the mere cessation of life, the Scriptures warn of what comes next. As echoed in timeless teachings, the true fear should not be directed toward those who can only take the body, but toward the one who holds power over both soul and body in eternity.

The notion of a divine force that destroys is not limited to later writings; its origins reach back through the ages. An iconic Old Testament narrative—the story of Moses and the ten plagues in Egypt—demonstrates this vividly. In that account, as calamities rained down on the land, the Israelites were spared in many instances, protected solely by their very identity as a people. Yet when it came to the final, fateful plague that targeted every household, this distinction was not enough.

The Blood That Saves and Doesn’t Save

In the lead-up to the ultimate judgment upon Egypt, God revealed that no earthly affiliation could shield one from the destructive force set to pass through every door. The only protection offered was found in the blood of the Passover lamb. While earlier plagues left the Israelites untouched due to their unique standing, the final disaster spared them only when they obeyed God’s command and marked their doorposts with the lamb’s blood. This act of faith ensured that the destroyer would “pass over” their homes, leaving them unharmed.

The lesson for today is strikingly similar. Each of us, regardless of background or belief, will confront death. When that moment arrives, there are only two outcomes: an encounter with a Savior or with a force of divine judgment. The safeguard, much like the protection seen in the Passover account, lies in trusting the saving power that has been made available.

The timeless truth is that every path leads to a singular divine encounter. How we choose to prepare in this lifetime will determine whether we stand before a compassionate Redeemer or one who exacts ultimate judgment. The choice remains both personal and eternal.
