Mashiach and a Byzantine General: A Lesson
“For not by numbers of men, nor by measure of body, but by measure of soul is the war to be decided.” – Flavius Belisarius
“What made Belisarius remarkable was his willingness to embrace the right course of action. Serving his nation and his God with unwavering dedication was reward enough, even if it meant facing hardship.” – Ryan Holiday
A Time of Turmoil and Duty
In the sixth century CE, the Byzantine Empire weathered internal strife and relentless external threats. Harsh nomadic invaders to the north, the formidable Sassanid Persians on the eastern frontier, and recurring waves of the plague all converged to create an era defined by hardship. As detailed in various historical accounts, the period witnessed severe climate disruptions, famine, bitter winters, widespread disease, and mass migrations. For the remnants of the once-mighty Roman Empire, the outlook was bleak.
Yet amid the chaos emerged two men who steered the empire through its darkest moments. Emperor Justinian implemented sweeping social and military reforms aimed at strengthening the realm, while his trusted general, Flavius Belisarius, repeatedly led his forces to victory despite overwhelming odds. Constantly underestimated by his peers and even his king, Belisarius faced demotions and unfounded accusations without ever wavering in his commitment. His record as a competent and professional commander, who seldom lost a battle, speaks to the power of resolute loyalty and perseverance.
Loyalty in the Face of Adversity
Belisarius’s career was marked by his remarkable ability to accept even the most daunting orders without complaint. In any complex organization, political maneuvering and corruption seem inevitable. Yet, from time to time, a figure emerges who is singularly dedicated to the mission, exhibiting what some refer to as “servant leadership.”
This general was frequently tasked with commanding unequal and under-resourced armies, charged not only with conventional defense but also with expanding the empire’s boundaries. Despite receiving orders that appeared impossible, and even when his loyalty was questioned by none other than Emperor Justinian himself, he never hesitated to carry out his duty. His steadfastness reminds us that true loyalty means following a leader even when the orders are difficult or uncomfortable.
Reflections for the Jewish Nation
The lessons from Belisarius’s life resonate today, particularly for those who await the arrival of Mashiach ben David. It is common to hope that redemption will free the Jewish people from suffering, antisemitism, and insecurity. Yet, in that longing, one must not overlook the nature of the task ahead.
Our national mission has always been to serve as a beacon—a shining light to others—even when faced with opposition. The destiny of the Jewish people is not simply to have a redeemer solve all our problems, but rather to be proactive in embodying the values required to build a just society. History teaches us that when a leader comes, his true strength is measured by the loyalty and willingness of his followers to make sacrifices for the greater good.
One can draw parallels with the biblical history of kingship. While the reign of King Saul faltered because many sought a leader who would serve them rather than lead by example, King David’s enduring success was built on the readiness of the people to follow a king who inspired service and dedication. The promise of Mashiach ben David, therefore, depends on our own preparedness to serve and transform our society.
Preparing for a Future King
It is not enough to simply await a savior who will perform miracles while we remain passive observers. Instead, we must cultivate a spirit of loyalty and self-sacrifice, much like the Byzantine general who trusted his king even when the price was high. Mashiach ben David may well require us to break out of our comfort zones and adapt to a changing reality. Whether through physical labor, personal transformation, or community service, the effort we invest will define the quality of our future redemption.
For example, consider the hardships endured by the fighters in past revolts, who left the safety of their homes to confront overwhelming foes. Today, we should ask ourselves: How willing are we to leave behind our routines and make meaningful contributions to our land and our people?
In practical terms, preparing for the coming redemption might involve several fundamental steps:
- Returning to Israel and re-establishing our deep, ancestral bond with the land.
- Reflecting on how we can serve both the land and fellow citizens—through military, volunteer, financial, or personal support.
- Cultivating respect and care for our fellow Jews, regardless of differences.
- Learning to honor our leaders and understanding that leadership demands mutual respect, not casual familiarity.
- Adopting a mindset of self-sacrifice and servant leadership as indispensable qualities for a renewed nation.
JFK’s timeless call—to contribute to the common good rather than expecting the country to serve one’s individual needs—remains relevant. Our future is tied to our collective willingness to work together, learn from history, and stand ready for the transformative leadership of Mashiach ben David.
May we all find the strength and commitment to embody loyalty and honor, preparing ourselves for the challenges and changes that lie ahead.
